Monday, October 6- Competition Begins Today
Here’s some stock market trivia to entertain you while you make your official choices for your team’s portfolio.
- Wall Street was laid out behind a 12-foot-high wood stockade across lower Manhattan in 1685. The stockade was built to protect the Dutch settlers from British and Native American attacks.
- The “stock market” began in May 17th, 1792 when 24 stock brokers and merchants signed the Buttonwood Agreement. (The buttonwood tree was simply the local name for the sycamore tree)
- The first stock ticker was invented by Edward A. Calahan in 1867.
- The Securities Exchange Act of 1934 creates the Securities and Exchange Commission, charged with the responsibility of preventing fraud and to require companies provide full disclosure to investors.
The Interactive Media class had the opportunity to make a video for CAPT this week.
CAPT’s “mother company” Honda Foundry has been in business for 50 years. There will be a huge celebration in Japan at the end of October. Delegates from CAPT will travel to Japan to take part in the celebration. The video that the Interactive Media class created will be shown as part of the event.
Today Susan Leo from International Business College spoke to Tri Star juniors and seniors in the Business Management, Graphics Communications, and Interactive Media classes.
In addition to information about the programs offered at IBC, she also discussed the importance of pursuing scholarships and helpful interview tips. The students learned that 25% of a job interview is based on your ability to communicate. She shared that employers ask “What is your number one weakness” to measure how you can identify and improve a weakness in their company. She left the students with a reminder to always write a handwritten thank-you note following an interview.
Friday, September 19 is the registration deadline for the October 25, 2014 ACT. Seniors, if you haven’t taken your ACT yet, this is the time of year to do it. You may need your scores for scholarship applications!

Coldwater High School will hold its annual college fair, tomorrow – Tuesday, September 16th from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Students and parents will have an opportunity to speak with representatives from area colleges and career technical schools. This is a great starting point for Juniors to begin researching colleges that match their career choices. It’s not to late for Seniors to examine other college choices before undertaking the projects of choosing a college, applying, getting accepted, searching for scholarships, etc. Each college rep is there to answer questions and offer guidance so don’t miss this opportunity to learn more your college choices and educational goals.
